– concluiu Galiotte.

Tempting prospect for bowlers at Kingsmead

The sun has made a welcome appearance in Durban but Wilson Ngobese, the chief groundsman at Kingsmead, doesn’t want to predict too much about the nature of the pitch for the Boxing Day Test

The sun has made a welcome appearance in Durban to ease some of the concerns for the ground authorities, but Wilson Ngobese, the chief groundsman at Kingsmead, doesn’t want to predict too much about the nature of the pitch for the Boxing Day Test.As of now, the track looks green and is rock solid, but if it doesn’t get enough sun, Ngobese fears a repeat of Centurion where the toss became a major factor because of the moisture retained by the covered pitch. And there has been only two days of fair weather until now: Tuesday and Wednesday have been the only dry days over the last week. Even Tuesday was overcast, though it didn’t rain.”I want to give a wicket that is fair for everybody,” Ngobese said, looking relieved to have uncovered the pitch. “It must not excessively help the bowlers too, and then if you can’t bat I can’t help it. But we are expecting more rain till the start of the match, and I am hoping for more such sunny days. Still, it should help the bowlers with good bounce.” BBC Weather has forecast light rains for Friday and Saturday, and heavy showers for the first day of the match.Ngobese said a lot depended on the weather. “If that man [pointing towards the sky] has other plans, I am helpless.” The sea breeze, he said, will help the bowlers, but the one blowing from west to east, into the Indian Ocean, can prove dangerous – for the batsmen and the game. That’s because the breeze from the west will bring rain, and the one from the sea will blow it away.Ngobese said he would cut the grass a bit, but not too much. “I don’t want to show cracks on the pitch.”Including Wednesday, there are four days to go until the start of the match, and the ground staff are hoping for good weather.Eight of the last nine Tests in Durban have produced results, with South Africa losing twice to Australia and once to England.

Taylor denies New Zealand were complacent

Ross Taylor has denied that his side were complacent in the final game of the three-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan in which the hosts were routed by 103 runs

Ross Taylor, the stand-in New Zealand captain, has denied that his side were complacent in the final game of the three-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan in which they were routed by 103 runs, the largest winning margin in contests between Test nations. New Zealand had already sealed the series after winning the first two games comfortably.”We wanted to win the series 3-0 after what’s happened over the last few months,” Taylor said, “and it’s disappointing to put out a performance like that in front of a pretty good crowd.”Chasing 184, New Zealand were bowled out for 80 in 15.5 overs, and at one stage were 3 for 4 with their top four batsmen – Jesse Ryder, Martin Guptill, Dean Brownlie and Taylor – all dismissed for ducks. “It’s a very disappointing way to end the series … when your four top batsmen get out for nothing it’s pretty tough chasing a total.”Taylor credited Pakistan’s bowlers for defending a target that he was confident his team would have been able to chase down. “The pitch changed a little bit but the way Abdul Razzaq and [Shahid] Afridi bowled was just outstanding,” he said. Afridi, the Pakistan captain, had career-best figures of 4 for 14 in 2.5 overs, and became the first player to reach the milestone of 50 Twenty20 wickets. He extended the New Zealand slide that began when Razzaq picked up three wickets with the new ball, while conceding just 13 runs in his four overs.Afridi said the win would come as boost to the Pakistan team that has struggled for consistency in recent times amid the spot-fixing allegations that have rocked the team. “This is the talent of Pakistan but we should be consistent,” Afridi said. “We’re trying to make a team combination before the World Cup (in February). I know we lost the series but this was a big win for us to keep our morale high.”The teams next play two Tests, the first of which begins on January 7. Taylor was hopeful that his team would be able to bounce back from what was a disappointing end to the Twenty20 series, after the initial optimism following John Wright’s appointment as national coach and their victory in the first two games.”The Test’s not far away, and it’s a bit disappointing to lose the momentum we had,” he said. “But the Test series is something where we did quite well in India, and hopefully we can improve on that back here in New Zealand.”

Chelsea to be without key duo v Wolves

Wolves will face a Chelsea side without midfield duo Jorginho and N’Golo Kante in their Premier League match this afternoon.

What’s the latest?

According to the west London club’s official website, the two Blues players will miss today’s clash at Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel withdrew Jorginho at half-time in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Everton due to injury and the Italian hasn’t recovered in time for today, whilst Kante missed the trip to Merseyside.

The Chelsea manager said: “For N’Golo it comes too early. Jorginho is out as well, these two are missing. Callum [Hudson-Odoi] and Ben Chilwell are still out.”

Lage will be buzzing

Wolves manager Bruno Lage will be keen to see his team’s recent woes come to an end, with a European place still very much up for grabs.

Despite four defeats in their last five matches, the West Midlands club are only three points behind seventh-placed West Ham United whilst having a game in hand on the Irons. Moreover, although unlikely, a sixth placed finish is still possible too.

However, last weekend’s shocking 3-0 defeat to Brighton at Molineux suggests that Lage’s men are already on the beach mentally, with supporters perhaps desperate to see the back of the season.

Goals have been at a real shortage for the entire campaign, with Wolves the top-flight’s fourth-lowest scorers with just 33 goals in 34 matches, having not scored in any of their last three outings.

Nonetheless, the Black Country outfit should take confidence from the fact that Chelsea’s home form of late has been woeful by their standards. The Blues have lost three of their last four matches at Stamford Bridge, whilst also losing 1-0 at struggling Everton last weekend, and today’s absences certainly won’t help their cause.

Together, Jorginho and Kante have totalled a combined 83 appearances for Tuchel’s side, averaging 7.06 and 7.13 seasonal ratings respectively from SofaScore.

It’s a major let-off for Wolves, who will be hoping that they can become the fourth team to win at Chelsea since the beginning of April, and the midfield duo’s absence will certainly leave Lage buzzing ahead of kick-off.

Man City dealt injury blow for Real Madrid

Manchester City have been dealt an injury setback ahead of their blockbuster Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid this evening.

The Lowdown: Huge night ahead…

Pep Guardiola’s are gearing up for a monumentous occasion at the Bernabeu tonight as City aim to reach a second-consecutive European Cup final for the first time in their history.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-newest-updates/” title=”Man City newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Sky Blues have set up a huge second leg in Spain after beating La Liga’s giants 4-3 at the Etihad Stadium last week, a match which saw many twists and turns.

City’s seven-goal thriller against Real will go down as one of the best semi-final matches since the Champions League’s inception, but that was only the first half, with Guardiola now preparing his side for another crunch clash.

In terms of team news, the Premier League champions have been boosted by defender Kyle Walker’s potential availability after a lengthy lay-off.

Meanwhile, star man Joao Cancelo is also back after missing the first leg through suspension.

The Latest: Guardiola dealt Stones setback…

However, as officially confirmed, City will be without centre-back and England international John Stones through injury as the pre-Real team news emerges.

This comes as a blow given the 27-year-old’s proven ability when called upon, as evident by his stellar performances in the Champions League this season.

The Verdict: Bad news for City?

Stones has proven his worth in Europe whenever called upon, most recently against Atletico Madrid in the last round, with journalist Henry Winter calling him ‘absolutely magnificent’.

The stellar partnership of Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias has resulted in a lack of minutes for the Three Lions ace when compared to last year, where both Stones and Dias formed a formidable 2020/2021 duo in central defence.

Having the former Everton sensation to call upon would have been a real luxury for Guardiola though, especially in case of mid-match emergences and with the possibility of tired legs in extra time, but it appears the Spaniard will be without that option for one of City’s most crucial games of the season.

Suhrawadi Shuvo sets up Bangladesh win

Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka in second-semi final by five wickets to seal their place in the final of the Asian Games in Guangzhou

Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in the semi-final of the Asian Games cricket event to seal their place in Friday’s final in Guangzhou. They will play Afghanistan – who stunned favourites Pakistan in the first semi-final – in the title match.Sri Lanka, who had reached the semis after scraping to a two-wicket win over Nepal in the quarters, won the toss and batted. They started positively with the openers Nuwan Zoysa and Jeevantha Kulatunga scoring at more than a run a ball and, at 38 for 1, looked set for a competitive total. However, Kulatunga’s dismissal at that point by Shahadat Hossain robbed them of momentum. Suhrawadi Shuvo strangled the Sri Lankan middle order with his left-arm spin, picking up 4 for 6. It was only some late hitting from Chinthaka Jayasinghe, who made 22 with one four and two sixes, that carried them past 100 before they were bowled out for 101.The total was never going to be enough to challenge the Bangladesh batsmen. Though they lost opener Mithun Ali early, solid contributions from Mohammad Ashraful, Faisal Hossain and Naeem Islam set the base for their chase, Faisal top-scoring with 33. Bangladesh reached their target in just under 16 overs. The Bangladesh women’s team had earlier won the silver medal in the inaugural women’s cricket tournament, where they were beaten by the Pakistan women’s team in the final and with their men’s team reaching the final, Bangladesh have a chance to add a gold medal to their tally. They have currently won just two medals, with a bronze in women’s kabaddi, apart from the silver.

Newcastle set for Brennan Johnson talks

A big update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their interest in Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson.

What’s the talk?

According to The Independent, the Magpies are scheduled to hold talks with the player’s representatives ahead of the summer, along with Leicester and Villarreal.

Brentford and Everton are also interested in the gem and are hoping to snap him up for a fee in the region of £20m-£25m. He has one year left on his contract with the Championship club and his agency – including his father – wants him to make the step up to the Premier League next season.

Johnson can get St James’ Park rocking

PIF can get St James’ Park rocking with a deal for Johnson, as he would be an exciting addition to the Newcastle squad in the short- and long-term.

He has been in phenomenal form for Forest in the Championship this season and has shown that he has the potential to make the step up to the Premier League next term.

Ex-Forest striker Glenn Murray showered the youngster with praise earlier this season, saying: “For me, Brennan, he just looks special. He just looks a cut above and he’s destined for the top.

“Yes, he’s not getting everything right at the moment but he looks at the top-level easily. I expect a really big future from him.”

In the current Championship campaign, Johnson has produced 15 goals and 10 assists for Steve Cooper’s team. This shows that he has been able to make a big impact in the final third as he has consistently delivered with the ball at his feet, scoring and setting up goals on a regular basis.

At the age of 20, he is still in the infancy of his professional career. He is just getting started and should have plenty of scope left to grow and develop as a player. This means that he would be a sublime long-term signing for the Magpies, as they would be able to watch his improvement over time and benefit from it on the pitch as he hones his skills.

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing with the club’s efforts to bring such a talented and promising young player to the club. St James’ Park would be rocking with excitement if PIF can get a deal over the line for the 20-year-old, and that is why the Magpies hierarchy must work hard to snap him up in the coming months.

Man Utd dealt injury blow pre-Liverpool

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has been dealt a huge blow over the fitness of his superstar centre-back Raphael Varane.

What’s the latest?

Speaking in his pre-game press conference on Monday, interim manager Ralf Rangnick revealed news that the United fanbase will be gutted to hear ahead of such an esteemed clash against Liverpool tonight.

The German confirmed that Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw, Fred and Raphael Varane will all miss the trip to Anfield.

On Raphael Varane’s injury status, Rangnick said: “Rapha [Varane] didn’t train with the team. He was on the pitch with one of our rehab coaches.”

Rangnick will be gutted

Whilst Varane has failed to live up to the standards we grew so used to seeing at Real Madrid defensively speaking, he has maintained his composure in possession – which would have been of great benefit to Manchester United against a high-pressing Klopp side tonight.

Maguire and Varane are difficult to split in their defensive metrics this season and are also the most composed duo on the ball within United’s central defensive line.

The 28-year-old has managed to transfer his passing prowess powers from his time at Real Madrid, with his passing completion percentages of both short and long pass types ranking him in and around the 90th percentile for positionally similar players across Europe’s top five leagues over the last 365 days, according to FB Ref.

His pass completion percentage for short passes is around 95%, whilst his pass completion percentage for long passes is lower at 81%.

It’s this particular range of passing that United will miss most tonight, with his efficiency in possession serving as a kickstarter for United’s counterattacks. For a defensive player, his ability to create is impressive, as can be evidenced through his assist against Wolves earlier this season.

Varane also brings experience at the back, with the Frenchman having a full understanding of the term ‘pressure’ with his experience on the big stage with Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

With Ronaldo ruled out and Maguire not seen as an out-and-out leader in most people’s eyes, Varane’s presence, just for experience alone, will be sorely missed.

Rangnick and the United faithful will be gutted, but can hopefully look forward to the Frenchman’s return soon.
