'I wanted to take them on' – Soumya

After scoring an unbeaten 88 which secured Bangladesh’s seven-wicket win against South Africa, Soumya Sarkar revealed that he kept trying to pull the short balls since he was confident he had the mindset to take on the visitors’ attack

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur13-Jul-2015After scoring an unbeaten 88 which secured Bangladesh’s seven-wicket win against South Africa, Soumya Sarkar revealed that he kept trying to pull the short balls since he was confident he had the mindset to take on the visitors’ attack. Soumya said that he was not worried about the consequences, like getting out, but understood the need to prolong his good starts.”I heard from somewhere that they will stop me by bowling bouncers,” Soumya said. “I wanted to play at them, even if I got out. I wanted to get out of that mindset. I planned that no matter how fast they bowl and how much they try to bounce me, I just wanted to take them on.”South Africa’s pace attack bowled eleven deliveries to Soumya that ranged between very short to just short of good length, but the batsman either managed to get on top of the bounce, or threw himself at a pull. He initially got mixed results as many of the balls fell short of the mid-off fielder after he failed to time it.But later in the innings, after Soumya had crossed 60, he cracked a pull emphatically off Kagiso Rabada for four. It was a statement of intent that he later said wanted to deliver to the opposition attack. Soumya added that South Africa hardly gave him breathing space like he received from the Pakistan attack on his way to an unbeaten 127 three months ago. He rated this unbeaten knock higher than the century.”Against South Africa, I have had to make a bad ball as they weren’t giving away. Pakistan were giving at least one bad ball per over. This was a tougher knock. We were chasing a bigger total against Pakistan so we could plan accordingly. Small targets are always hard to chase. We have to change plans quickly. You have to start fresh after quick wickets. I will keep this innings ahead.”In the four innings after his maiden century on April 22, Soumya failed to bat for more than 47 deliveries or 70 minutes. He made 54, 34, 40 and 27, but got out trying to attack further. The BCB president Nazmul Hasan had mentioned the same to him during their meeting on Saturday, but Soumya said he has heard the exact same thing from everyone.”Everyone says the same thing. Even those who are younger than me tell me, ‘Bro, please finish your innings’. I have been getting used to this,” he said. “I didn’t do too many different things to prolong my innings. My target wasn’t to score a 50 or a 100 but to finish the chase. I just wanted to play till the end.”Soumya said that he minimised the risk in his plan to play a longer innings. Bangladesh’s poor start of losing Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das by the fourth over also contributed to his subdued start.”I cut down one or two of my shots thinking that it might bring me a positive result. A big innings always brings relief. I started differently today but that was due to the circumstances. I think I faced just one ball in the first three-four overs. We had lost two wickets by then so I had to think fresh. I had thought earlier that I would play in my own way. But the two wickets changed my plans.”The other factor he feels helped was having Mahmudullah back in the team. Soumya and Mahmudullah added 135 runs for the third wicket that took Bangladesh within four runs of victory. The pair has already added three fifty-plus stands and Soumya said Mahmudullah understands his game the best, which helps them bat well together.”Since the World Cup whenever I see Riyad bhai come to bat, I smile. I do that whenever I see him in the middle. Today I told him everything is fine. But what he tells me, I always take it seriously. He understands my batting very well.”

The Manchester United legend, who now works with Lionel Messi in MLS as co-owner of Inter Miami, reached a century of outings for his country when taking in a friendly date with France in Paris on March 26, 2008.

Beckham, who would go on to earn 115 caps for the Three Lions, suffered a 1-0 defeat at Stade de France against the likes of Franck Ribery, Nicolas Anelka, William Gallas and Claude Makelele – with England having already failed to qualify for that summer’s European Championship.

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

The night was a memorable one, though, as he became only the fifth Englishman to reach 100 international appearances. Said occasion was marked by a pair of custom boots that featured St George’s Crosses and the names of the three children that he had at the time with pop star wife Victoria – Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz.

WHAT THEY SAID

The boots in question are now set to go under the hammer, with a starting bid tabled of £4,600. David Convery, head of sporting memorabilia at Northamptonshire-based Graham Budd Auctions, has said of the lot: “David Beckham is not only an iconic player, but you could also argue that he started the 'style revolution' with this type of golden boot. These boots are already attracting attention on a global stage and we wouldn't be surprised if they reached or even went beyond their estimated price.”

El Clasico Combined XI: Jude Bellingham and Robert Lewandowski lead the way – but does Lamine Yamal deserve a place already?

Barcelona and Real Madrid will face off in Catalunya on Saturday, but who would make a team made up of the two super-talented squads?

Has there been a more evenly matched Clasico in recent memory? Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have their strengths and weaknesses, and just one point separates them after 10 matches of La Liga's season. In fact, those strengths and weaknesses also match up quite well.

Madrid are stacked in the engine room, blessed with six top-class central midfielders to fit into four positions. Barca, meanwhile, have a superb defensive unit and are dangerous on the wings, with Xavi's a team comprised of some of the best young talent in Europe at crucial positions.

Given Madrid's slight edge in the early weeks of the title race, Barca will feel they need to pick up three points at home. But it may not be that easy. The Blaugrana are dealing with a number of injury problems, and are rushing some of their game-changing talents back to fitness.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have injury issues of their own, with Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao unlikely to play much of, if any of the rest of the season after suffering serious knee problems at the very start of the campaign.

So with that in mind, and looking at current form, who would make a combined XI for this latest Clasico? GOAL has had a go at picking the best possible team…

Getty ImagesGK: Marc-Andre ter Stegen

There might be a real contest here had Courtois not torn his ACL before the 2023-24 season started. But Madrid replaced him with Kepa Arrizabalaga, who simply isn't of the same quality as Germany's No.1.

Ter Stegen has actually struggled somewhat early in the campaign, making a few uncharacteristic mistakes. That has led to him keeping just five clean sheets and conceding half as many goals as he did over the course of the entire 2022-23 campaign. Still, Ter Stegen has shown in moments that he is still undoubtedly one of the best in the world.

AdvertisementRB: Joao Cancelo

Cancelo has offered an upgrade at a position where Barca didn't really seem to need one. Jules Kounde filled the right-back role admirably last year, but always made it clear that he felt more comfortable in the middle.

That said, Man City loanee Cancelo has offered the kind of creative spark from deep that the Blaugrana were lacking last year, causing problems with his incisive passing and dribbling ability. Add his late winner against Celta Vigo, and the Portuguese already looks like one of the signings of the summer.

Dani Carvajal, admittedly, deserves a shout here, too. The Madrid full-back looks reborn this campaign — more like a younger version of himself. Still, Cancelo has simply been more important.

Getty Images CB: Ronald Araujo

Araujo hasn't been at his best to start the season. Whether it be injuries or an odd slip up, the centre-back hasn't captured his scintillating 2022-23 form. But he has still been better than any of the other centre-backs that Barca have to offer. Dominant in the air, excellent one-on-one, and composed on the ball, Araujo is a perfect modern central defender — and will only improve.

A fit Militao would certainly push him for selection here, but with the Madrid man out for the year after sustaining a serious knee injury, there is only one option to lead this backline.

GettyCB: Antonio Rudiger

Rudiger started the season as Madrid's third-choice centre-back. It was assumed that both David Alaba and Militao would keep him out of the side, making the former Chelsea man a squad player as Madrid looked to reclaim the Liga title.

Instead, he has become a crucial part of a makeshift defence. With Militao done for the year and Alaba sidelined with a muscle problem, Rudiger has stepped up immensely. His one-on-one chops and ball-carrying ability are near unrivalled in the Spanish top-flight, while he has also improved as a passer.

Andreas Christensen has certainly enjoyed some good moments for the Blaugrana, while Kounde has impressed in spells. But Rudiger is a top-tier, reliable presence at the back that any team would love to have.

De Kock bound for Titans, Parnell to Cobras

Quinton de Kock and Wayne Parnell are the two nationally contracted players who have opted to change franchises ahead of the 2015-16 summer

Firdose Moonda26-May-2015Quinton de Kock and Wayne Parnell are the two nationally contracted players who have opted to change franchises ahead of the 2015-16 summer. Both are leaving the teams where their careers began with De Kock moving from Lions to Titans and Parnell from Warriors to Cobras.De Kock’s shift is more surprising because he was quite close to Lions’ head coach Geoffrey Toyana, who oversaw an important phase of his career when he was trying to break into international cricket. After de Kock had an unsuccessful start with a particularly poor tour of Sri Lanka in 2013, Toyana spent many hours in the nets with him to hone his game. The results were stand out – de Kock reeled off three centuries in succession against India, became South Africa’s regular limited-overs opener and wicketkeeper and started his Test career as well.In the process, de Kock also earned IPL deals, first with Sunrisers Hyderabad and then Delhi Daredevils where he would have worked closely with Rob Walter, Titans’ head coach for two seasons after a long stint as South Africa’s fitness and fielding coach. Titans won their first trophy under Walter, the one-day cup in the 2014-15 season, after sharing the trophy with the Cobras the year before.Walter has two more years in charge and will be targeting more silverware. De Kock will add to a squad that has already poached another Lions player, Chris Morris and two other glovemen. Heino Kuhn and Mangaliso Mosehle may give him a break from being behind the stumps. The situation will not be too unusual for de Kock, who also found himself with a clutch of keepers at the Lions. Thami Tsolekile and Dominic Hendricks both play at Lions and have been retained for next season. At the coastal end of the country, Parnell travels from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town for “lifestyle” reasons according to his agent Donne Commins. While his move has left the Eastern Cape based franchise without one of their senior bowlers, it has added to the embarrassment of riches in the Western Cape. Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Rory Kleinveldt, Justin Kemp, Dane Piedt and Robin Peterson make up the international component of the Cobras attack while they also have promising youngsters in Dane Paterson and Mthokozisi Shezi, who, like Parnell, is a left-arm seamer. The only solace for the other franchises is that Cobras’ national players do not often turn out for them because of international commitments and Parnell is likely to be no different. When he is available, coach Paul Adams intends to use him as a “fully-fledged allrounder.”

Younis apologises again, free to rejoin team

The PCB has accepted Younis Khan’s apology for his actions during the Pakistan Cup in Faisalabad and his subsequent refusal to attend a disciplinary hearing

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-2016The PCB has accepted Younis Khan’s apology for showing dissent during the Pakistan Cup in Faisalabad and his subsequent abandonment of his team and refusal to attend a disciplinary hearing. On Tuesday, the PCB had barred Younis from participating in the tournament and served him a show-cause notice asking him to explain his actions. Younis responded by apologising and expressing his regret over the incident.”Younis has served Pakistan cricket for a number of years and he has developed a shining reputation in Pakistan and abroad,” PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan said. “While this incident is unfortunate, I am glad to note that Younis has admitted his mistake.”ESPNcricinfo understands that Younis’ alleged misdemeanours included questioning an umpiring decision, showing dissent and threatening an umpire during a Pakistan Cup game in Faisalabad. Reacting to the charges, Younis, captain of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reportedly left his team in protest and refused to attend the disciplinary hearing. He was fined 50% of his match fee for breaching level 2 of the PCB domestic code of conduct. Younis had apologised to the PCB chairman on Monday as well, but he was served a show-cause notice.Following the acceptance of his second apology, Younis may now rejoin the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa squad should the team qualify for the final of the Pakistan Cup.

Former Red Devils and England star Beckham entered into a long-term agreement with adidas back in 2003. He had already been part of that sponsorship stable for some time prior to that, with Beckham becoming the face, body and feet of the iconic three-striped brand in the late 1990s.

Beckham is now synonymous with adidas and proved to be the perfect PR machine for offerings such as the famous Predator boot line. But it is Neville – who was never quite as flashy on and off the pitch – that claims to have first introduced Beckham to the footwear that helped to enhance his image and make him a global superstar.

WHAT THEY SAID

Ex-United defender Neville has told the Red Devils’ social media channels: “Do you know something? You know David Beckham is with adidas because of me. I gave him his first pair of Predators in the USA in 1994. And that is a true story my friends at adidas. I don’t get the actual recognition I deserve for that!”

The 17-year-old started against the European minnows on Saturday night and got on the scoresheet in fine style with a clinical finish after 17 minutes to make it 3-0, following own goals from Ethan Santos and Aymen Mouelhi.

However, his evening was cut short when Santos scythed him down as he swept the ball home. A VAR review followed and the Gibraltar defender was sent off. The Paris Saint-Germain wonderkid, meanwhile, was forced from the field with an ankle injury in the 20th minute.

Zaire-Emery is seen as the next big thing in France. He is already a regular at PSG and now he is a French international at the tender age of 17. He is now the third youngest French scorer for the national side behind Maurice Gastiger (also 17) and Julien Verbrugghe (16) – with the duo playing back in 1914 and 1906 respectively.

Incidentally, PSG will hope the teenager's injury is not a serious one as they try to win Ligue 1 once again and mount a serious challenge in the Champions League.

Spurs have reportedly made bid for De JongBarcelona have offered midfielder a new dealNetherlands international yet to put pen to paperWHAT HAPPENED?

Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona have essentially given De Jong an ultimatum, and have demanded he either sign the contract that has been offered to him – it has been on the table since November – or bring an offer to the table. Following that report, Jijantes claims that Tottenham have made a bid worth €60m (£51m) for the midfielder, and have offered him a four-year deal with the same wages he is currently earning at the Camp Nou. It remains to be seen if De Jong would be willing to make that move, or if Spurs would need to sell players to fund it, given the costs involved.

De Jong's current contract expires in 2026, and Barca are aware that this summer may mark the final time they can receive a hefty fee for the 26-year-old, and would prefer to go into the next transfer window knowing his intention to either leave or remain. There is rival interest to Spurs, with Chelsea and Manchester United also interested, along with Paris Saint-Germain. Barca have placed a €100m (£85m) asking price on De Jong.

De Jong remains a key part of Barcelona's squad and has made 23 appearances in all competitions, with his only absences coming through either injury or suspension. He has also won 54 caps for the Netherlands.

No excuses for Sri Lanka – Malinga

A spot in the semi-finals of the World T20 could well be heavily weighted on the toss of a coin when Sri Lanka take on New Zealand for one remaining spot in Group 1

Sa'adi Thawfeeq30-Mar-2014A spot in the semi-finals of the World T20 could well be heavily weighted on the toss of a coin when Sri Lanka take on New Zealand for one remaining spot in Group 1, but stand-in captain Lasith Malinga will refuse to use a wet ball and damp outfield as an excuse and believes his side are better prepared after coming unstuck against England.Sri Lanka could not defend 189 as Alex Hales clubbed an unbeaten 116, the expensive performance of Ajantha Mendis, who conceded 52 off his four overs, proving especially telling and the spinner may pay the price for the crunch game. Malinga was also less effective than is so often the case, going wicketless and at almost eight an over during his four overs.”When we play night games we must know to use those conditions. We can’t give excuses against a wet ball and things like that. That’s my feeling as a bowler,” he said. “In the bowling sometimes we are on top but in the last few overs against England we didn’t do very well.””Now it’s in the past and we are looking forward to the next match. We had a good training session yesterday and today and we know how to adjust to situations like dew and when the ball becomes slippery. We are all prepared.”Malinga, the team’s T20 vice-captain since October 2012, said that he was under no extra pressure leading his country for the first time even though so much was at stake. He has been forced into this position after Dinesh Chandimal was suspended for one match for his team being penalised twice for slow over rate within a 12-month period.”It’s a good feeling to captain my country for the first time. I really like to get challenged in my bowling or in my career,” he said. “This is a good opportunity for me. The other thing this is it is a crucial game and I am not thinking too much about the captaincy but to just to give 100% and win the match tomorrow.”I have a lot of good support from some experienced T20 captains in the side like Mahela, Kumar , Dilshan and Angelo . As captain I want every single player to prove his skills in tomorrow’s game.”Sri Lanka and New Zealand have met each other on 12 occasions and are tied at five wins apiece, with Sri Lanka having won the last two meetings. The teams also have the experience of a Super Over when the World T20 match at Pallekele in 2012 ended in a tie.”We have no choice but to win the match if we want to get qualified for the semi-finals. However, as a team, we’re in very good shape, I mean mentally. If you look at the last few games that we played, we’ve played well to win them,” Malinga said.”In our recent tournaments, we’ve always won the crucial match and came into the finals. We handled that pressure well. With England playing Netherlands in the first match of the day, Malinga said that his team will follow closely that game to see how the pitch behaves before deciding on their final eleven. Batsman Lahiru Thirimanne is expected to replace Chandimal, but the bowling remains unclear with either Rangana Herath or Seekkhuge Prasanna in line to replace the struggling Mendis.

Flintoff return a 'challenge' for Lancashire – Moores

Peter Moores, the new England coach, has given a lukewarm response to the idea of Andrew Flintoff coming out of retirement to represent Lancashire in T20 cricket

Freddie Flintoff takes stunning catch off own bowling

Peter Moores, the new England coach, has given a lukewarm response to the idea of Andrew Flintoff coming out of retirement to represent Lancashire in T20 cricket.Moores, who was the Lancashire coach until April, accepted that Flintoff, at his best, would be an asset to any side but warned that his return could present a challenge to the club management and risks destabilising a side that has started well in this year’s NatWest T20 Blast. Lancashire are currently top of the North Division, with four wins in their first five games. While interest in Flintoff’s return has led to a flurry of ticket sales ahead of Lancashire T20 Roses clash against Yorkshire at Old Trafford, Moores warned that his selection should only be made for “cricketing reasons” and not simply as a marketing tool. He also suggested that it could be a distraction for the rest of the team.”It’s a sensitive issue with the players that are there,” Moores said. “They are playing really good cricket at the moment, so definitely you’d think it would be a tough side to get into.”A fit, strong, playing-well Andrew Flintoff is going to add to any side. But he is coming back from retirement, so they have got to make the assessment of where he is, against what they have in their current staff.”To know that, you’d have to be on the inside. You have to be watching people practise and play and decide that it’s not too much of a distraction and if it’s going to work. It’s got to be a cricketing decision.”It’s a challenge and it has to be handled well. But you have to pick the best side to play for Lancashire. That’s what the supporters are going to watch, and that’s the most important thing.”Glen Chapple, who stepped up to take responsibility for Lancashire’s first team after the departure of Moores, also offered a note of caution, despite the momentum building behind a Flintoff return against Yorkshire. “It would not be an easy game to come back in,” Chapple said, after the second day of Lancashire’s Championship match against Somerset.”In terms of him playing, we will just have to see how things go,” he said. “The team will be picked on merit. When and if he plays, it will be very exciting for everybody who comes to watch.”They have all been tough teams to pick. We are leaving out good players all the time, which is difficult to do. We have won the last four games and the squad will understand that. All we can do is pick the team we feel is the right one.”The players who are in possession have done a fantastic job, especially our bowlers. We won’t be taking any liberties with their positions. They are doing really well. The way ‘Fred’ plays his cricket, you can see him being beneficial for any time. Let’s wait and see what Friday morning brings.”
